The hilarious action-comedy starring Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling is getting a gender and age makeover for a new TVĀ show remake.
The ladies would have to step into the shoes of the two very different private detectives, Gosling’s clumsy Holland March and Crowe’s short-tempered Jackson Healey desperately trying to find a missing girl, who’s disappearance turns out to be linked to a porn star’s death involving dangerous Mafiosi.
The age is sadly shifted from the 1977s to the present day and that would probably have a significant impact on the quality of the series bearing in mind that was a crucial part of the film’s charm. It also makes me wonder what would make it different than any other police/PI driven show.
Continuing the trend for recasting male roles with female leads there would also be a Kung Fu reboot.
The Shaolin monk who was once portrayed by David Carradine would now be a Buddhist monk and kung fu master Lucy Chang. She would journey across 1950s America to find and retrieve her lost child. Her partner in crime would become the enchanting Korean War veteran JT Cullen, who would possibly keep secrets of his own.
The script is being taken care of a lady too. Wendy Mericle is on the job.
I have to be honest, I love that these shows are being remade as I would hopefully get to enjoy some of my favourite big and small screen heroes. However, even though I like the current Hollywood drive for more female parts I do not appreciate fiddling with already perfect formulas.
Why are writers still rehashing old stories and spoiling beloved characters instead of creating new and fresh ones, which are equally as good as their male counterparts? The answer is obviously money. I guess studios consider using more women as an already notable risk and would rarely venture off into constructing something truly visionary.
